Walk 6 - The A38 (3.5 miles)

The A38 dual carriageway meant that quite a few footpaths were diverted.  This route follows some of those diversions so follows paths alongside the main road in both directions.  Whilst the scenery is nice this route can be a bit noisy

This walk starts from Over Lane by the bus stop and the drive to Nos 148/150/152.  Head down the drive, and look for a stony path straight ahead between two walls.  Follow this path to a gate to fields.  Bear right following the path slightly downhill across fields and stiles.  As you approach a gate with stile it is difficult to see the path. Just past the gate look in the hedge to your right and you will see a metal kissing gate.  Go through and turn left. Cross the stile to a footpath which crosses some woodland and then across a grassy field used for dog training.  Head for the gap in the hedge and turn right onto a farm track looking carefully for a small gate on the left just a few metres up the track.  Through the gate, head across the field to another small gate to reach a path. Turn left onto the path and follow this past a house and through a gate.

Follow the track as it heads downhill and over the A38 on a bridge.  At the immediate end of the bridge turn left onto a path between the hedges.  Ignore a track on the right and cross a stile to continue walking alongside the field edge.  Continue walking to some telegraph poles and continue past into the top far left corner of the field to a stile.  Cross this stile and turn immediately right to cross another stile and head slightly downhill with woodland on the left to a metal gate and stile.

Cross the stile to a grassy farm track and follow this until it emerges on Street Lane at a children’s playground.  Turn left and head uphill through the village until you come to a wooden bus shelter on the left.  Take the lane on the left between houses, over a stile and past stables. Go through a white wooden gate and continue along the field edge with woodland on the right.  Continue crossing a stile and going through a small gate.

Head towards the metal field gate ahead and cross the bridge over the A38. At the end of the bridge you will see a metal gate marked ‘Private’.  Go through the metal kissing gate to the left of this and then turn immediately left to follow the woodland on the left alongside the A38.  Continue over a stile and a concrete footbridge.  Emerge over a stile to the field edge before going over another stile back into the woodland. The path swings away from the main road, over a stile and heads uphill with hedges on the left, over more stiles and finally through a stone squeeze stile to return to the starting point
